The St. Andrew’s Canvas Pictures Project FAQ
Q1 What is the Frameless Canvas Pictures Project all about?
A At St. Andrew’s we have a tradition of reaching out to our community by hosting numerous events in Fellowship Hall. Through the collective efforts of many volunteers, that room has recently been refreshed and the Decorating Committee proposes to commission Four Custom-made Frameless Canvas pictures to hang on the walls to make that important space even more vibrant and engaging.
Q2 Is the cost of these custom designed pictures in the 2025 budget?
A No. This project is funded by legacy gifts and other donations given to the church and managed by the Heritage Committee.
Q3 Who will choose the Four Frameless Canvas pictures?
A The Decorating Committee believes that the custom-made pictures should be chosen by our church members and adherents.
Q4 How will that work?
A Church members and adherents are invited to submit up to five photos per person, taken by them or a family member, which meet our criteria.
Please send submissions to: art@standrewsmarkham.ca
An Initial Selection Team will review all submissions and select up to ten images. The congregation will then vote to choose the four final images to be printed.
Photo submission window: Sunday, June 29 to Sunday, July 27
JPEG images are preferred.
Q5 Besides the photo, what other information do I need to submit?
Please include:
The name of the member or adherent submitting the photo
The name of the photographer and family relationship
A statement of willingness to give copyright permission
(Optional) Where the photo was taken
(Optional) How it reflects God’s masterful creation
Q6 What are the criteria?
A We are looking for photographic images which best match our theme, which is, Nature is the Art of God. The images should primarily reflect God’s natural scenery, including photos of plants, animals, the panoramic landscape, and other features and products of the earth. Photos may include people or human elements, but the central focus should remain on God’s natural creation.. It is also important that the photos be an appropriate fit to hang in Fellowship Hall. The images must also have a high degree of sharpness to be effectively enlarged, or the potential to improve the resolution if needed.
Q7 What if my photo in not a JPEG format?
A For purposes of the initial evaluation, we suggest you use your cell phone to take a picture of your print and send that in.
Q8 How will the Selection Team be chosen?
A The team will consist of the Decorating Committee, excluding the project leader. The leader has invited several individuals who regularly host functions in Fellowship Hall, and a person to represent the congregation-at-large, to join the Team.
Q9. Judging art is a subjective exercise. How can you ensure that all submissions will be judged in a consistent manner?
A Each member of the Initial Selection Team will be randomly assigned to a subgroup, and submissions will be randomly assigned to each subgroup. The top 10 from each subgroup will be referred to the full team to choose the 10 photos to be put on the ballot for the congregation to select 4.
Q10 Will members of the Initial Selection Team be announced in advance?
A Outside of the Decorating Committee members, the names of the other Team members will not be announced until the final congregational vote is complete.
Q11 Will the Initial Selection Team know who submitted the photo?
A No. During all initial selecting, up to and including the congregational vote, the photos will be identified only by a number assigned by the project leader and her assistant.
Q12 How will Members and Adherents vote?
A Voting will be on-line from Sunday, August 3, to Sunday August 10. You can vote for up to four images. Only one vote per image is allowed.
Q13 Will the project leader be the final authority to resolve any disputes?
A No. The project leader, Rev. Jim, and a technical advisor will be the Adjudicators.
Q14 How can those without computers submit images and vote?
A Those without computers can submit and vote by calling Roseanne at 905-294-2386. During Voting week, photos of the 10 finalists will be displayed on the Bulletin Board in Fellowship Hall.
Q15 How can I get additional information?
A Please contact Roseanne Dumitru or Lynda Skeoch if you have any additional questions.
